Course Description

In this course you will have opportunities to practice and develop your ability to communicate in Vietnamese, by developing speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. You will acquire a basic understanding of Vietnamese language, culture and society. The course will equip you for cross-cultural situations.
 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Communicate in both oral and written basic Vietnamese in some social contexts, including greetings, introductions, simple instructions, be able to describe people and places, ask for information, and apply basic grammatical concepts in communication
  • Read, interpret and comprehend simple authentic spoken, written and multimedia Vietnamese materials
  • Identify and begin to evaluate language learning strategies and techniques to develop your language skills, and demonstrate independent learning
  • Identify and discuss aspects of the Vietnamese culture and the relationship between culture and language
  • Describe your own cultural values and norms, and to make comparison to the Vietnamese ones, beginning to reflect on and develop your knowledge of cross-cultural communication issues and challenges
     



Overview of Learning Activities

Exercises in small groups, pairs and online will provide you with opportunities to regularly practise and develop your communication skills through a variety of activities such as conversations, games and role plays. Your regular participation in class learning and commitment to completion of assignments are essential to successful completion of the course.

You will be required to purchase a prescribed textbook and an English-Vietnamese and Vietnamese-English dictionary.


Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on the above learning outcomes and graduate capabilities. Assessment tasks may include, but are not limited to, in-class role-plays and quizzes, oral and listening tests, and a written exam. You will be assessed progressively throughout the semester in class, and in a final exam. Feedback will be provided throughout the semester. If undertaking the course as a postgraduate student you will be required to demonstrate higher capability and submit an additional assessment task.
