Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Co requisite BUSM4329 Health classification and clinical coding - general

Course Description

In this course you are introduced to Health Information Systems, which deal with the resources, devices and methods required to optimize the acquisition, storage, retrieval and use of information in a health care setting for morbidity reporting.
You will gain practical experience with computer hardware and software; gaining practical experience with a range of common software used in healthcare and in the community in general.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for Associate Degree in Health Sciences
3. Recognise and apply relevant technologies in health to perform work tasks
7. Apply the knowledge and skills of your study stream in community or health care settings

  1. Describe an 'information system' in a health care setting
  2. Identify the types of data and information that require processing in a healthcare setting and the management required, including mandatory reporting requirements for public health
  3. explain the requirements for maintenance of quality data collection and exchange processes
  4. define the main characteristics of a database management system
  5. explain management issues of security, privacy, legal requirements and ethics for health information systems.
  6. Describe the structure of different types of healthcare records
  7. Abstract relevant clinical information from a range of simple medical records by applying your knowledge of health record structure, principles, the language of clinical practice and simple diseases/conditions/diagnoses and medical treatments in simple cases where the are few codes to be allocated or where simple clinical concepts and coding rules apply. (note this covers 50% of the code books not all clinical topics).
Specialties:  endoscopy, oncology, accidents and injuries, Endocrine basics, ophthalmology, ear, nose and throat.
  1. Accurately interpret and apply the Australian National Coding Standards to clinical data from a range of medical reports and records found in simple medical record cases to completely represent data for morbidity reporting
  2. Apply morbidity data collection requirements

Overview of Learning Activities

In this course you will learn through the following activities:
• Face to face teaching: to obtain an understanding of basic concepts that are required to undertake further study
• Personal reading (e.g. prescribed sections of textbooks and online materials): to reinforce/strengthen your understanding of the coding conventions, standards and practices.
• Undertake classification and coding for a range of medical records, using a computerised coding system in a simulated work environment
• Participate in tutorials to explore solutions to simple coding issues.

Overview of Learning Resources

You will be provided with the following resources on-line through Blackboard (myRMIT):
• Relevant guidelines, standards including Australian Coding Standards
• Clinical coding on-line text ICD-10 – AM and ACHI text.
• A range of texts, online learning materials, scenarios and coding answers.
You may also be referred to other resources available in the RMIT Library, such as videos and the subject learning guide:
