Course Description
This course will focus on legal and ethical issues for a range of workforce roles in health.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for the Associate Degree in Health Sciences:
5. Manage and develop your own work and lead and manage others within a health or community context
6. Apply ethical practices and be committed to the ethical and professional standards in health
7. Apply the knowledge and skills of your study stream in community or health care settings
On completion of this course you should be able to:
1. Understand and explain professional responsibilities including ethical, legal and governance obligations in a health setting.
2. Access, review and apply legislation, policies, professional codes of conduct, privacy principles, etc in identified health workforce roles.
3. Explain the importance of key topics in the health sector including access and equity issues related to different work areas, client’s rights and consent, privacy, security of records, confidentiality, e-health, and ownership of information.
4. Participate in compliance monitoring activities to ensure work practices reflect principles of ethical practice
5. Use problem solving skills to interpret and apply policy in the workplace and to develop procedures.
Overview of Learning Activities
In this course you will learn through the following activities:
• Face-to-face teaching to obtain an understanding of basic concepts and principles.
• Online learning
• Group discussion of case studies in relevant work roles in the health workforce.
• Tutorial activities to consolidate the theoretical concepts covered in lectures
• Self-directed study time (readings and/or short videos to enhance and strengthen your understanding of theoretical concepts and encourage reflection
Overview of Learning Resources
All lecture material will be available as handouts online. You will be required to download these in preparation for each lecture and tutorial. You will also need to read a range of recommended texts, online materials, library resources and other learning materials.
