Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Required Prior Study

You should have satisfactorily completed the following courses before you commence this course.

Alternatively, you may be able to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge before you start this course.

Contact your course coordinator if you think you may be eligible for recognition of prior learning.

Course Description

This course includes a Work Integrated Learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real workplace context and where feedback from industry is integral to your experience.

This course is conducted as a co-operative education sandwich course during which you undertake a program of supervised professional practice in either medical research or hospital or private pathology laboratory affiliated with the department, for the purposes of educating and training future diagnostic or research Medical Scientists.

At any time prior to or during your placement if there are concerns raised related to your fitness to practice the WIL coordinator can request that you gain full medical clearance to continue your placement.

Work Integrated Learning:

Students enrolled in this course will be required to undertake placement as part of the assessment of the course.  A number of requirements must be met by students to ensure eligibility for placement.  Further details on each of these are available in Part B of the Course Guide and on MyRMIT.

  • National Police check
  • Working with Children Check
  • Immunisation Declaration Form

There is no flexibility with these requirements.  It is your responsibility to ensure THESE REQUIREMENTS ARE COMPLETED.  Any student who has not provided this information will not be able to attend placement and will receive a fail grade for the placement course.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for the BP147 Laboratory Medicine Program:

  • Knowledge Capability (PLO 1)
  • Technical Capability (PLO 2)
  • Professional Work Practices (PLO 3)
  • Communication Skills (PLO 4)
  • reflective capability (PLO 5)

On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

  3. Discuss the importance of, and be able to apply, sustainability concepts within the placement laboratory.
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of Evidence Based Practice (EBP) in the placement laboratory.
  5. Discuss current laboratory accreditation procedures, as well as Quality Control (QC), Quality Assurance (QA) and Total Quality Management (TQM)
  6. Exercise professional duty of care and practise ethically and in a non-discriminatory manner
  7. Discuss the need for effective communication and work in partnership with other professionals, contributing effectively to team work.

Overview of Learning Activities

As you may be placed in a diverse range of laboratory settings it is not possible, or in fact desirable, to be too specific about the type of learning experiences that you might encounter. As guidance to supervisors your learning experiences should be designed to address the professional competencies articulated for Medical Scientists in Australia.

Total Study Hours: You are expected to complete 100 days of laboratory/professional practice experience in this course.  In addition you can expect to spend a minimum of six hours per week in independent study.

Overview of Learning Resources

The learning resources available during this course include the library resources of RMIT, plus the full resources of the organisation in which you are placed. The course will also have a myRMIT site through RMIT's online Learning Management System (LMS) for the conduct of an online conference throughout the semester, and for the access of documents and learning materials related to the course.

All hurdle requirements for this course are indicated clearly in the assessment regime that follows, against the relevant assessment task(s) and all have been approved by the College Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching).

Please note that it is a hurdle requirement to pass this course that you submit satisfactory evidence for all of the competency standards noted below. It is also a hurdle requirement to complete 100 days of laboratory placement in order to successfully complete this course.
