Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

ONPS2173 Principles of Professional Practice 1 and ONPS2463/2473 Professional Practice in Pharmaceutical Sciences 1 are required prior study. Students who have not successfully completed the prerequisites must withdraw, or will be withdrawn if they incorrectly enrol in this course.
 


Course Description

This course will provide you with experience, skills, knowledge and attributes that characterise a pharmaceutical science professional that can only be obtained in the workplace. It provides an opportunity for you to acquire a range of professional skills which complement academic learning in the university environment. This course will be taken in second semester of the Professional Practice year by students enrolled in the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Pharmaceutical Sciences) program. It will complement the concurrent studies being undertaken by students in their Principles of Professional Practice 2 (ONPS2173) course.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

After successfully passing this course you should be able to:
Integrate theoretical and practical skills acquired in an academic environment, with the skills expected of a pharmaceutical science professional
Competently use modern equipment and information technology relevant to your placement position
Understand medical and scientific ethics, professional legislative and regulatory requirements of the pharmaceutical and related industries
Appreciate health and safety issues affecting work practices in pharmaceutical industry and associated areas
Display enterprise and personal skills such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving, decision making, initiative and creativity
Reflect upon and critically analyse your experiences during your period of industry work placement

Overview of Learning Activities

As this is a Work Integrated Learning course, teaching schedules will vary based on the work place in which you are placed. Assessment due dates will be published on MyRMIT, and completion of your 40 week placement which commenced in ONPS2463/2473 will take place.


Overview of Learning Resources

You have access to course materials on the online RMIT Learning Hub (myRMIT), and these may include digitised reading material, lecture notes, external internet links and access to RMIT Library online and hardcopy resources, as well as access to online conference facilities. You will additionally have the full resources of the organisation in which you are placed.
 


Overview of Assessment

The assessment activities required in this course are designed to enhance your communication skills and to encourage you to critically evaluate the working environment in which you find yourself, both in the context of this placement and in the future.

 

Work Integrated Learning:

Students enrolled in this course will be required to undertake placement as part of the assessment of the course.  A number of requirements must be met by students to ensure eligibility for placement.

Students are responsible for any expenses associated to attending professional placement.  These costs may include, but are not limited to the following: uniform, police check application, first aid training, travel, accommodation and vaccinations.

Placement Agreements:

Placement agreements between RMIT and the placement organisation are in place.  Any information required by students contained in the agreement is available on MyRMIT or InPlace.

 

National Police check:

Students may be required to apply for a National Police Record Check at the request of the placement organisation prior to the commencement of placement. 

It is important to note that a disclosable outcome may prevent a student from accessing suitable, or any, professional placement(s) and may therefore be delayed or prevented from satisfactorily progressing through the program.
