Course Description

In this course you will explore the nature of risk and risk management from a criminal justice perspective in a local, national and global context.


You will investigate management frameworks and plans within your chosen organisation’s context, specifically related to their needs, objectives, context, structure, operations, processes, services and clients, as well as the needs of internal and external stakeholders. You will assess the challenges that face the organisation to minimise risks and threats. You will develop decision making skills that will assist you to maximise the opportunities and avoid, transfer or limit the negative impact of risk on your organisations objectives and processes.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:


• Identify and describe the range of potential risks – political, social, technological, financial and environmental risks in a criminal justice context at a local, national and global level
• Apply logical, critical and creative thinking to solve the range of problems associated with assessing and managing risk in criminal justice organisations
• Analyse the internal and external risk factors and influences that lead to uncertainly related to whether, when and how the criminal justice organisation will achieve their objectives
• Apply risk evaluation frameworks in management of risks or potential risks through the establishment of appropriate quantitative and qualitative techniques.


Overview of Learning Activities

Key concepts, theories and their applications will be explained and illustrated in lectures, guest seminars and online notes. These will provide the opportunity for you to develop problem solving and analytical skills in group and individual activities.

Your learning will be supported by constructive participation in group discussions, and through engaging with readings, and diverse in class and/or online exercises.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes. Your capability to understand, analyse, plan and evaluate risk and risk management issues will be developed though a range of assignments that enhance your decision making skills to this end. A range of assessment tasks will be utilised and may include, reports, briefing paper, essay, presentation, group work tests and online activities
