Course Description

In this course you will develop a social design conscience for acting responsibly as a designer in a global context. You will analyse, assess and apply a lens for sustainability and the environment in the context of the built interior.

Through research, analysis and discussion you will lead and respond to current thinking on sustainability and its applications.

You will develop a digital reference system for a wide range of product, materials, and construction principles.

You will apply methods and safety work practices to inform and guide sustainable work practices in the interior design and decoration industry.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program outcomes:

  • Implement broad knowledge and skills of space planning, construction and fitout to select and specify materials, furnishings, colour and lighting for sustainable interior solutions.
  • Engage with contemporary trends in the interior decoration and design industry to investigate related emerging manufacturing, materials and technologies. 


Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Investigate and recommend a range of hard materials and finishes suitable for interior applications.
  • Assess and specify quantities and qualities of materials for a given use to Australian standards and building regulations.
  • Investigate and apply the principles of passive design re orientation, thermal mass, insulation, ventilation and glazing.
  • Create aesthetic and functional material presentations for client proposals using a legend referencing system.


Overview of Learning Activities

Learning activities will include class discussions, supervised project work, independent investigation, peer feedback, reflection, site visits, demonstrations, audio visual presentations, online learning (blogs and wiki), studio work and guest presenter demonstrations.

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.’

Audio visual presentations, library and internet references, relevant Australian Standards, Environmental regulations, and case studies as class notes accessed via internet.


Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

Assessment may include a range of activities such as in-class exercises, portfolio, models, presentations and individual / group projects.

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.

Assessment tasks in this course are either formative or summative. Formative tasks provide the basis for ongoing feedback and can be considered essential building blocks for the more substantial summative assessment tasks. Summative assessment tasks in this course are graded.


Assessment Task 1 Timber Framing to AS1684 (20%)

This task relates to the following course learning outcomes:

  • Investigate and recommend a range of hard materials and finishes suitable for interior applications.
  • Assess and specify quantities and qualities of materials for a given use to Australian standards and building regulations.


Assessment Task 2 Reference Portfolio_products and systems (40%)

This task relates to the following course learning outcomes:

  • Investigate and recommend a range of hard materials and finishes suitable for interior applications.
  • Assess and specify quantities and qualities of materials for a given use to Australian standards and building regulations.
  • Investigate and apply the principles of passive design re orientation, thermal mass, insulation, ventilation and glazing.
  • Create aesthetic and functional material presentations for client proposals using a legend referencing system


Assessment Task 3 Detailing of Iconic Interiors (40%)

This task relates to the following course learning outcomes:

  • Investigate and recommend a range of hard materials and finishes suitable for interior applications.
  • Assess and specify quantities and qualities of materials for a given use to Australian standards and building regulations.
