Course Description
In this course you will explore and apply the knowledge and skills required to analyse a design brief, conduct investigation and generate decoration ideas and concepts to create a visual experience in a defined interior space
You appraise and apply a range of soft furnishings and explore their applications within Interior space.
Through this knowledge and skills of furnishings and finishes you will be able to recommend interior fit out which includes curtains and window fittings, carpets and textiles used in upholstery, cushions and trimmings, in order to achieve integrated decoration and design solutions to meet a project brief.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
In this course you will develop the following program outcomes:
- Work with industry to develop and promote a globally sustainable practice of good design and decoration with a focus to the future
- Engage with contemporary trends in the interior design industry and investigate related emerging and evolving manufacturing technologies and materials.
- Create design solutions to meet the needs of the client and address all industry conventions in both manual and digital formats in response to a design brief.
- Implement broad knowledge and skills of space planning, construction and fit out to select and specify materials, furnishings, colour and lighting for sustainable interior solutions.
Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:
- Apply knowledge and skills to develop a personal reference folio of ideas, styles, and visual inspiration with an interior decoration focus for interior design concepts
- Problem solve to plan, organise and communicate your design process with related language to deliver desired decoration outcomes and effects
- Analyse and interpret interior decoration references and resources to effectively communicate your interior decoration and design ideas
- Create a presentation for complete interior solution of your interior decoration and design ideas and concepts
Overview of Learning Activities
Learning activities will include supervised project work, independent investigation, peer feedback, reflection, site visits, demonstrations, audio visual presentations, online learning (blogs and wiki), studio work and guest presenter demonstrations

Library references, architectural and interior decoration and design websites, international interior design and decoration papers and magazines, gallery and museum sites and online interface
Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet course learning outcomes and on your development against program learning outcomes.
Assessment may include a range of activities such as in-class exercises, portfolio, models, reports and individual / group projects. Feedback will be given progressively throughout the course and on all assessment tasks
Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
Assessment tasks in this course are either formative or summative. Formative tasks provide the basis for ongoing feedback and can be considered essential building blocks for the more substantial summative assessment tasks. Summative assessment tasks in this course are graded.
Feedback throughout the course may be written, verbal or a combination of both.
Assessment Task 1 Exploring Fabrics (20%)

Assessment Task 2 Decoration Concept (30%)
This task relates to the following course learning outcomes:
- Problem solve to plan, organise and communicate your design process with related language to deliver desired decoration outcomes and effects
- Analyse and interpret interior decoration references and resources to effectively communicate your interior decoration and design ideas
Assessment Task 3 Decoration Presentation and Documentation (50%)
This task relates to the following course learning outcomes:
- Apply knowledge and skills to develop a personal reference folio of ideas, styles, and visual inspiration with an interior decoration focus for interior design concepts
- Problem solve to plan, organise and communicate your design process with related language to deliver desired decoration outcomes and effects
- Analyse and interpret interior decoration references and resources to effectively communicate your interior decoration and design ideas
- Create a presentation for complete interior solution of your interior decoration and design ideas and concepts
