Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
You should have satisfactorily completed the prerequisite courses ARCH1375 Decoration Design Studio 1 and ARCH1379 Decoration Design Studio 2 before you commence this course.
You should also undertake ARCH1387 Decoration Design Studio 3 at the same time as this course as it contains areas of knowledge and skills which are implemented together in practice. These are co-requisite courses.

Course Description
This course is taken in the final semester of the Associate Degree and involves a major project. The project will allow you to develop, manage and achieve holistically the objectives of a design project. This capstone will meaningfully build on prior experiences and capacities while also developing critical skills in evaluation of learning needs for a given scenario. The project work will be the focus in both this course and Decoration Design Studio 3.
You will focus on a complex design solution for a medium scale, multi-purpose space. The major project will focus on Interior fit outs relating to commercial or institutional spaces. These directions may include the design for specialist care facilities such as non for profit organizations and children’s learning spaces or exhibition spaces, retail spaces and community spaces. Each project will acknowledge a strong social conscience.
You will develop the conceptual premise for one of these environments. Based on the detailed criteria set out by the brief, your design solutions will balance the pragmatic and functional requirements with conceptual and creative underpinnings. Your conceptual development of designs in Decoration Design Studio 3 will consider social, cultural, psychological and environmental factors in order to create holistic design experiences.
You will explore and resolve your design solutions from concept through to design development and presentation and finally documentation.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:
- Work within industry to apply good design practices of decoration and design with a view to developing a sustainable global future.
- Investigate and adapt knowledge of design history, theory and culture to contemporary Interior Decoration and Design context and practice.
- Create design solutions to meet the needs of the client and address all industry conventions in both manual and digital formats in response to a design brief.
- Implement broad knowledge and skills of space planning, construction and fit out to select and specify materials, furnishings, colour and lighting for sustainable interior solutions.
- Apply initiative to work both independently and collaboratively and perform effectively as a member of a creative team with responsibility and accountability for own learning and work.
Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:
- Investigate and analyse site and context to inform the design process
- Explore and demonstrate skills in translating the brief into a design that expresses conceptual aims.
- Produce plan, section, elevation and perspective drawings for presentation using a range of manual and digital techniques
- Document, measure and record information that relates to the project site.
- Produce a full set of documentation and detail drawings for a commercial or institutional space
- Interpret the appropriate regulations, standards and codes from the Building Code of Australia and the Australian Standards.
Overview of Learning Activities
Learning activities will include supervised project work, independent research, group work, site visits, demonstrations, audio visual presentations, online learning (blogs and wiki), studio work, peer feedback, reflection and guest presenter demonstrations.

Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.
Assessment may include a range of activities such as in-class exercises, portfolio, models, presentations and projects.
Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
Assessment tasks in this course are either formative or summative. Formative tasks provide the basis for ongoing feedback and can be considered essential building blocks for the more substantial summative assessment tasks. Summative assessment tasks in this course are graded.
Feedback throughout the course may be written, verbal or a combination of both.
Assessment Task 1 Site Investigation (20%)
