Course Description
In this course you will explore and analyse the language of typography. The historical and cultural directions of typography including influential typographers will be examined. Your critical and creative skills in the application of type as image and the communication potential of type as text will be developed. Analysing the structure and application of different fonts will introduce you to the conventions of type management.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
In this course you will develop the following program outcomes:
1. Identify and employ a range of graphic and communication techniques in order to design, refine and produce artwork using well developed digital production skills for multiple contexts.
2. Demonstrate innovation and critical thinking when applying technical and creative skills to address artistic and industry problems.
6. Reference historical and contemporary design theory and culture in order to develop and adapt knowledge and skills to a range of graphic design outcomes.
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
1. Recognize the function and application of typography including different typographic styles
2. Consider key directions in the historical and cultural use of typography
3. Identify and compose type to produce typography in response to a brief
4. Describe typographical technical and quality problems
5. Manage electronic type systems and follow required conventions
6. Seek and provide feedback on developing work, evaluate feedback and apply where appropriate
Overview of Learning Activities
Your learning activities will take place in a studio and computer environment using industry software. Activities involve digital and manual exercises and briefs. You will also be required to undertake independent study.

A list of recommended learning resources will be provided including books, references and web sources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning. Student learning resources also include access to computer laboratories and relevant software.
