Course Description
In this course you will explore how children gain an understanding of spoken and written language, are socialised into culture, gain the ability to think symbolically and develop imaginative abilities and a theory of mind. You will focus on language and literacy codes including: pre-verbal language, speech, communication and literacy awareness. You will be introduced to current theories of language development, literacy in the early years and socio cultural theories on the growth of languages within relational contexts. Pedagogical practices that facilitate language, literacy and an appreciation of literatures across cultures will be explored. You will learn to design environments and learning experiences that are language rich and promote an aesthetic appreciation of a variety of narrative styles.

- Demonstrate broad and coherent theoretical and technical knowledge in education
- Critically analyse and apply theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to your professional practice in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment across a range of disciplines, reflecting a graduate level of proficiency in teaching
- Consolidate and synthesise expert content and pedagogical content knowledge and develop highly effective classroom teaching skills in an area of specialisation
- Develop deep and broad knowledge of education theory and the transformative potential of education in society in both local and global contexts
- Apply initiative, judgement, creativity, critical thinking and problem solving skills and the capacity to work responsibly, ethically and inclusively in individual and collaborative professional contexts to enhance your practice
- Demonstrate an understanding of and capacity to promote education for a sustainable future and to support diversity in all its forms
At the conclusion of this course you will be assessed on the following learning outcomes:
- Develop a comprehension of language development years birth to eight
- Apply knowledge of language growth to pedagogical practice
- Investigate the role of the family in supporting the use of symbolic languages
- Design and evaluate language learning environments that promote appreciation of different narrative styles in early childhood settings
- Analyse the relationship between use of languages and culture.
Overview of Learning Activities
You will be engaged in: theory lectures, workshops to explore use of materials, practice in designing high quality language environments in tutorials, discussion on experiences encountered in professional practice, linking the National Framework Communication Learning Outcome to activities presented in workshops and tutorials.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.
Assessment may include reports, projects and presentations, individually and in groups. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.

Assessment Task 1: Review of Children’s Book – 50%
Assessment Task 2: Educational Website for Early Childhood Educators – 50%
