Course Description

In this this course you will be introduced to key concepts of visual arts in early childhood settings. You will develop conceptual and technical skills for fostering opportunities for children to create artworks. The course will involve connecting with art at a personal level and in the community to promote understandings of the diversity of social, cultural, environmental and aesthetic aspects of visual arts, including those of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islands peoples as they apply to early childhood education


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Recognise and develop your creative potential and so enable a confident approach to creating individually imaginative artworks
  • Implement innovative art programs in early childhood settings that involve both individual and collaborative learning experiences
  • Identify and critically evaluate a range of learning resources, including art materials, tools and Internet resources
  • Make explicit links between children’s artwork and the work of renowned artists from past and present cultural contexts, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islands cultures


You will be assessed on your development of the following program learning outcomes in this course:

  • Develop and apply theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to your professional practice and development in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment.
  • Demonstrate creativity, critical thinking and innovation when identifying and solving problems in diverse educational contexts.
  • Work with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural, environmental and social awareness and ethical and reflective practice.
  • Apply initiative and judgment in planning, problem solving and decision making to enhance your practice and continuing professional development.


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities both face-to-face and online such as lectures, art studio-based practical workshops, class discussions, group work, individual research, written work and presentations; also, engagement with video and Internet resources and visits to galleries and related organisations.

The overall purpose of learning activities is to help develop confidence in your artistic capabilities and foster aesthetic appreciation. Activities will enhance your skills in fostering young children’s creation of artworks and designing appropriate art programs in early childhood settings.

You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.


Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

Assessment may include reports, projects and presentations, individually and in groups. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.
Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
