Course Description

In this course you will extend the key theoretical and practical elements of visual and performing arts explored in Introduction to Arts Education, and explore further best practice arts pedagogies appropriate to primary school age children in all five art disciplines and forms: Visual Arts, Media, Dance, Music and Drama as outlined in the Victorian and Australian Curriculum. Students will develop knowledge and competence in Visual, Media Arts and Performing Arts, by developing curriculum initiatives and exploration of arts practices in a wider social, cultural and environmental context.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Your learning in this course is focused on development of the following program level capabilities:

Demonstrate creativity, critical thinking and innovation when identifying and solving problems in diverse educational contexts
Develop and apply theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to your professional practice and development of curriculum, pedagogy and assessment
Work with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural, environmental and social awareness and ethical and reflective practice
Apply initiative and judgment in planning, problem solving and decision making to enhance your practice and continuing professional development.

At the conclusion of this course you will be assessed on the following learning outcomes:

Critically apply skills and principles in both visual and performing arts within a broader cross-curricular and cross-cultural context
Create arts experiences suited to primary school age children through self-initiated, collaborative project work
Reflect and discuss upon the arts as an integral component of a child’s learning for life and in relation the community at large
Identify best practice regarding pedagogy in arts education, including social, cultural and environmental awareness

Overview of Learning Activities

This course is based around hands-on collaborative learning and teaching workshops in arts skills and knowledge and best practice pedagogy. The range of activities may include one-to-one, small group, whole class learning and peer teaching and learning activities. Critical discussion and evaluation of arts theory and practice is informed and supported by pertinent current readings, independent individual and small group research, online materials, and excursions to arts venues and attendance at live performances.

Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems. A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning and specific to your own particular arts projects, and to engage live with works of art and arts performances.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.

Assessment may include reports, projects and presentations, individually and in groups. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.
Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.

If you have a long term medical condition and/or disability it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the program coordinator or the Disability Liaison Unit if you would like to find out more.

An assessment charter http://mams.rmit.edu.au/kh6a3ly2wi2h1.pdf  summarises your responsibilities as an RMIT student as well as those of your teachers.
