Course Description

This course begins with you as a reader to develop the necessary knowledge, skills and understandings about the teaching of reading in order to consolidate and extend students’ literate practices in the primary school. You will be introduced to theoretical frameworks that inform your own reading and the teaching of reading and its interrelationship with writing. You will begin to develop a teacher’s perspective on the reading process. You will also enlarge your repertoire of children’s literature and learn critical ways to select a range of multimodal texts for diverse learners that can be used to support and extend students’ reading and writing practices.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explore contemporary reading theories, practices and metalanguage 
  • Develop and design reading strategies for primary readers
  • Critically select a repertoire of literature (print and non print based) for primary school readers
  • Reflect on and apply effective personal literate practices.


You will be assessed on your development of the following program learning outcomes in this course:

  • Develop and apply theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to your professional practice and development in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment
  • Critically analyse, synthesise and reflect on educational policy and practice in both local and international contexts
  • Apply initiative and judgment in planning, problem solving and decision making to enhance your practice and continuing professional development. 


Overview of Learning Activities

Overview of Learning Activities You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities both face to face and online such as lectures, tutorials, group and class discussion, group activities and individual research.

Work integrated learning is a major teaching and learning theme for this course and it puts you at the centre of the learning process and makes you responsible for your learning. The teaching team will support you in the development, progress and completion of your assessment tasks. This course involves the successful completion of professional experience; learning activities will ask you to link theory with practical areas of the profession in a variety of education settings.

A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.


Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.

Assessment may include reports, projects and presentations, individually and in groups. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.
