Course Description

In this course you will explore problem-based learning approach to integrated curriculum. You will be immersed in collaborative learning to solve a complex problem centred on issues of sustainability. You will reflect upon the pedagogies used throughout the problem-solving process and identify how different areas of learning have been integrated. You will apply learning to the development of authentic, engaging integrated learning curriculum plans that embody the principles being taught. The course also aims to draw upon people and resources from the wider community, and models the effective integration of Information Communication Technology (ICT).   This course includes a work integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/ or community is integral to your experience.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Your learning in this course is focused on development of the following program level capabilities.

Develop and apply theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to your professional practice and development in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment.

Demonstrate creativity, critical thinking and innovation when identifying and solving problems in diverse educational contexts.

Work with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural, environmental and social awareness and ethical and reflective practice.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

Distinguish between different models of integrated learning, with an emphasis on problem-based learning.

Extend your knowledge of how to utilise and integrate ICT and collaborative learning in classrooms

Develop personal skills in analysing, evaluating and synthesising information; forming hypotheses; creating and justifying ideas; as well as develop capabilities in fostering such skills in your own students

Design and plan an engaging integrated curriculum learning experience drawing on a variety of pedagogical strategies.

Overview of Learning Activities

This course will involve a range of activities including research, reflection, discussion, observation, responding to educational scenarios, lectures, workshops. In addition, webinars discussing the pedagogical strategies used in each workshop will be created and will form the basis of weekly online discussions in which you will be expected to participate.   This course introduces you to learning that crosses primary school discipline boundaries. A series of online lectures will provide important theoretical foundations for cross disciplinary learning. Lectures will contain provocations for you to think about before your weekly tutorials. Weekly tutorials will comprise activities designed to help you connect theory and practice. You are expected to view all online lectures before your tutorials. Where pre-tutorial tasks are set you are expected to do these before tutorials. You are expected to attend all tutorials.   Work integrated learning is a major teaching and learning theme for this course and it puts you at the centre of the learning process and makes you responsible for your learning. This teaching team will support you in the development, progress and completion of your assessment tasks. This course involves the successful completion of professional experience; learning activities will ask you to link theory with practical areas of the profession in a variety of educational settings.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.

Assessment may include reports, projects and presentations, individually and in groups. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
