Course Description

In this course you will explore all aspects of organising school camps. You will develop the skills and knowledge in planning, organising and running a primary school outdoor education camp. You will collect and collate teaching and organisational skills and ideas, developing your knowledge about the educational, physical and social development of primary school-aged children through outdoor education experiences.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

You will be assessed on your development of the following program learning outcomes in this course:

  • Engage with diverse learners in a range of educational contexts in order to develop skills and knowledge for flexible and adaptable participation in professional communities of practice.
  • Develop and apply theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to your professional practice and development in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment.
  • Critically analyse, synthesise and reflect on educational policy and practice in both local and international contexts.
  • Demonstrate creativity, critical thinking and innovation when identifying and solving problems in diverse educational contexts.
  • Communicate using a range of formats and strategies to audiences within and external to the discipline of education.

You will be assessed on the following course learning outcomes. Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Critically discuss how outdoor and adventure activities contribute to all students’ learning
  • Collaborate with others to organise an outdoor education camp incorporating appropriate teaching and planning strategies
  • Identify and analyse the complexities of organising a successful camp and how they may be addressed through collaborative effort
  • Plan and teach outdoor education and camp sessions
  • Appreciate, model and apply safety standards and risk analyses to the planning of educational camps and its activities
  • Identify and address the legal requirements involved in taking children away on school camps
  • Identify and use a wide range of suitable outdoor education and camp resources
  • Involve all learners effectively using a wide range of resources.


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be engaged in learning that involves class and group camp planning meetings, online communication including with camp management, individual and group study, practical team teaching sessions, and individual and group reflective writing on learning by primary school-aged children in camps.


Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems. A list of recommended  learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.


Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.

Assessment may include reports, journals, portfolios, projects and presentations, individually and in groups. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
