Course Description
In this course you will focus on the place of health education in the primary school curriculum. You will consider and discuss health issues such as wellbeing, grief, mental health, sexuality, drug education and nutrition. Promoting Health Education will concentrate on the planning of health education, curriculum design and approaches to teaching health. You will examine the educational policies that impact on health education and the appropriate use of health resources and working with health promoting organisations. Broader issues such as the social and cultural aspects of health education, discomfort, controversy and working with parents/guardians and the community around health issues will also be introduced.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Critically evaluate, design and develop health teaching and learning experiences using current educational theory, education initiatives and current curriculum frameworks
- Critically analyse the discipline of health and its relationship to contemporary social and cultural issues
- Articulate and incorporate an acknowledgement of diversity in your teaching of health education
- Select and use a range of effective teaching and learning strategies to enhance the teaching of health education
- Develop communication skills for working with parent/guardians and health education professionals and organisations.
You will be assessed on your development of the following program learning outcomes in this course:
- Engage with diverse learners in a range of educational contexts in order to develop skills and knowledge for flexible and adaptable participation in professional communities of practice.
- Develop and apply theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to your professional practice and development in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment.
- Communicate using a range of formats and strategies to audiences within and external to the discipline of education.
- Work with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural, environmental and social awareness and ethical and reflective practice.
- Apply initiative and judgment in planning, problem solving and decision making to enhance your practice and continuing professional development.
Overview of Learning Activities
You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities both face to face and online such as lectures, tutorials, group and class discussion, group activities and individual research.
Overview of Learning Resources

A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.
Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.
Assessment may include reports, projects and presentations, individually and in groups. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.
Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
