Course Description

In this course you will be introduced to concepts and pedagogical approaches relevant to the teaching of history in the primary school. You will engage with content that focuses on significant events in Australian History and a selection of significant people who have enacted change and shaped Australian culture. You will investigate the history and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders (ATSI) and deepen your knowledge of Australia’s history and relationship with Asia. You will reflect on the nature of historical knowledge and the implications of this for learning and teaching. 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

 Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify and use key concepts for developing historical understanding such as evidence, continuity and change, cause and effect, significance, perspectives and empathy
  • Articulate knowledge of societies, events, movements and developments that have shaped world history with an emphasis on Australian, Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander and Asian histories
  • Demonstrate and use the appropriate skills and historical tools to question, analyse and present historical data or inquiries
  • Discuss and be familiar with relevant Victorian, Australian and International policy documents and frameworks related to the learning and teaching of Australian history
  • Design and deliver primary curriculum materials to support teaching of Australian history that are informed by a variety of pedagogical approaches, theories and policies
  • Analyse and critically reflect on the contribution to and significance of Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander peoples and culture to the Australian physical, political and social landscape


You will be assessed on your development of the following program learning outcomes in this course:

  • Develop and apply theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to your professional practice and development in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment.
  • Work with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural, environmental and social awareness and ethical and reflective practice.
  • Apply initiative and judgement in planning, problem solving and decision making to enhance your practice and continuing professional development.


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities both face to face and online such as lectures, tutorials, group and class discussion, group activities and individual research. The interactive tutorials will encourage active participation in specially designed learning experiences such as role plays, discussions, field trips, debates, research and the sharing of ideas.

A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.


Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.

Assessment may include reports, projects and presentations, individually and in groups. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.
