Course Description

This course is an introduction to child development and learning. It addresses a range of perspectives for understanding the learning and development of children within educational and social contexts. This course introduces you to a number to theoretical traditions and practical positions for understanding the complexity of influences on learning and development. You will apply these perspectives to enhance your knowledge about children as learners and participants in socio-cultural settings.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Discuss the development of children from infancy through to adolescence
  • Identify the influence of theoretical traditions in child development on the design and implementation of curricula
  • Critically reflect on personal perceptions and understandings of learners and learning
  • Investigate effective pedagogies, based on sound educational philosophies, principles and approaches to child development, to your practice in a range of settings
  • Identify and describe learning opportunities informed by understandings of child development to support learners in specific educational and social contexts. 


You will be assessed on your development of the following program learning outcomes in this course:

  • Develop and apply theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to your professional practice and development in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment
  • Demonstrate creativity, critical thinking and innovation when identifying and solving problems in diverse educational contexts
  • Work with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural, environmental and social awareness and ethical and reflective practice

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities, lectures, tutorials, discussions, readings, problemsolving, group and individual activities, critical analysis,  reflection and research.

You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.


Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.

Assessment may include reports, exams, projects and presentations, individually and in groups. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.
