Course Description

This course is one of a sequence of professional experience courses designed to develop your teaching practice in a work-integrated learning context. The focus of this course is on the teacher as a professional with responsibilities to the learners they teach, colleagues, parents and the community. An emphasis is placed on the application of educational theory to practice in educational settings. In particular, you will draw on theory, your developing teaching philosophy and the knowledge and skills you have accumulated throughout your program to complete the Graduate Teacher Performance Assessment (GTPA) as part of work integrated learning.

This course includes a work integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/ or community is integral to your experience. You must successfully complete the GTPA task (assessed by academic university staff) and the placement in order to pass this course and the program.

You will be assessed on your development of the following program learning outcomes in this course:

  • Develop and apply theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to your professional practice and development in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment.

Overview of Learning Activities

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities both face to face and online such as lectures, tutorials, group and class discussion, group activities and individual research.

Work integrated learning is a major teaching and learning theme for this course and it puts you at the centre of the learning process and makes you responsible for your learning. The teaching team will support you in the development, progress and completion of your assessment tasks. This course involves the successful completion of professional experience and the Graduate Teacher Performance Assessment; learning activities will ask you to link theory with practical areas of the profession in a variety of education settings.

You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.

The GTPA assessment task is a standardised assessment task that has been validated by AITSL as meeting the requirements of the national Initial Teacher Education program standards. The completed tasks will be moderated by a minimum of two university staff and selected samples will be further moderated for comparability and reliability by staff at other Australian universities.  Feedback will be provided on this assessment task.

Assessment in this course is directly connected to your successful participation in professional experience. The end-of-placement report from your supervising teacher(s) on your professional development and participation in professional experience is an important component of your assessment. It will provide evidence of your ability to demonstrate the relevant professional practices and course learning outcomes specifically associated with the assessment tasks in the course.
