Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Students should have progressed to mid-way or beyond in their program to enrol in this course, and all first-year core courses must have been completed.

This course is open to undergraduate students from any program in School of Design, including Communication, Games, Animation, Industrial Design, Digital Media.

Course Description

Design Internship provides you a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) opportunity with design-oriented businesses and organisations. You will experience how to contribute to design practice in a business, government or community context. This course may be undertaken in a variety of modes that are appropriate to your learning experience. You will learn about professional design practice by working alongside experienced designers within a host enterprise.

Your internship will be of 80 hours duration. To enable flexibility with securing an internship, you can elect to extend your internship duration by an additional 40 hours. These additional hours will not be assessed but will be covered by RMIT insurance.

Your internship can be spread out over several months or as an intensive immersion into a particular setting.  Your internship can be in Australia or abroad; and can be remote or face-to-face.  As there are no face-to-face teaching hours this course may be able to be completed entirely remotely.

Once you are enrolled you will receive links to the WIL Toolkit which will provide further advice on how to look for and carry out your placement.

Industry Internship Requirements

An agreement including schedule and relevant insurance documentation is required to be completed before commencing each internship (local and international). International internships must be registered and processed through RMIT Global Mobility (Melbourne) / RMIT Career Development and Employment (Vietnam).  In the case where a placement ends early, please refer to changes or cancellation of WIL activities in the WIL Procedure.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

Apply analytical, critical, creative and strategic thinking to design problems and research within complex and unfamiliar contexts and concerns.

Collaborate with other specialists and key stakeholders on design problems on multi-disciplinary projects in diverse settings.

Generate innovative approaches to design problems and solutions, with a criticality and openness to the perspectives and needs of others in a situation.

Initiate, plan, manage and execute research and design projects with independence and in an objective and ethical manner.

Reflect on own learning and the efficacy of design decisions made, adapting to needs and issues as they arise, and continuously seeking improvement.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

1) Locate your approaches to design within ethical and operational protocols of the design profession.

2) Work effectively in collaboration with (and under direction from) industry mentors and demonstrate initiative in the execution of design tasks.

3) Demonstrate a capacity to apply design knowledge and skills in a professional context with criticality and creativity.

4) Reflect deeply on own conduct and experience in view of continuing professional and intellectual development.

Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in undertaking design activities within a professional work context. This will include design development and documentation, learning about the various operational process and ethical protocols of a commercial design studio or design-oriented business or organisation, reflecting on your experience of working in a professional context, and presenting that experience to a community of peers. You will be supported by a range of  resources and consultations  to assist your  internship experience.
