Course Description

In this course you will focus on how to conceptualise, create, and evaluate ideas and technical approaches for interactive media, animation and games, through play. You will explore play as a method for investigating theories and concepts and to develop and experiment with production techniques that advance your practice in new ways.

You will draw on historical and contemporary theories and approaches of play to communicate ideas via a series of production-based investigations. Through these investigations, you will develop practice-based research skills in your interactive media speciality, critically applying diverse and emerging technologies and demonstrating innovative conceptual approaches.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

You will be assessed on your development against the following Program Learning Outcomes:

  • Acquire and apply knowledge of local and international perspectives and issues about contemporary animation, game and interactive media.
  • Employ appropriate technical skills and theoretical knowledge to solve problems associated with creative work.
  • Undertake research into contemporary media and communication theory and practice to explore possible industry and career directions.

Upon the successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Conceptualise, create and evaluate inventive content for playful forms of animation, games and interactive media by applying emerging technologies, creative solutions, production methods and research skills.
  • Critically appraise the development of ideas to innovate the current state of animation, games and interactive media with reference to historical and contemporary international practice.
  • Implement novel modes, theories, principles and strategies of play in developing your practice.
  • Present your practice to diverse audiences for feedback and evaluation.
  • Analyse feedback on your practice and reflect upon the implications for future ideas and developments of playful experiences and practices in animation, games and interactive media.
