Course Description

Assessment in early childhood services has received increasing emphasis in recent years and “assessment for learning” is one of the six Practice Principles listed in the national framework Belonging, Being and Becoming: an early years leaning framework. In this course you will apply your skills and knowledge of reflective pedagogical approaches to develop formats for planning, documenting and evaluating children’s learning. Data that may influence children’s learning, for example, sharing with parents and being aware of events in the home environment and community will be identified and incorporated into the documentation of children’s learning experiences. Different assessment methods that support a range of theoretical approaches to early childhood education will be introduced with a focus on the learning outcomes stated in the national framework.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Reflect on the experiences and environments provided to support learning
  • Plan for children’s learning, now and for the future
  • Develop documentation processes that record children’s progress against the learning outcomes of the national framework
  • Incorporate family and community knowledge into planning for individual children


You will be assessed on your development of the following program learning outcomes in this course:

  • Critically analyse, synthesise and reflect on complex theories and recent developments both local and international contexts. 
  • Communicate using a range of formats and strategies to audiences within and external to the discipline of education. 
  • Engage with diverse learners in a range of educational contexts in order to develop skills and knowledge for flexible and adaptable participation in professional communities of practice.

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities both face to face and online such as lectures, tutorials, group and class discussion, group activities and individual research.

You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.


Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.

Assessment may include reports, projects and presentations, individually and in groups. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
