Course Description

This course focuses on the importance for early childhood educators to collaborate, communicate and plan in their partnerships with parents and community to achieve best practice in working with children in early childhood education and care contexts. You will explore the importance of building mutual and reciprocal relationships with parents and community in supporting children in their learning outcomes. You will examine parent programs, policy and practice for partnerships with families and communities. You will develop strategies for building partnership with families and community that ensure comprehensive, holistic and continuous approaches to early years education and care for young children.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Discuss the importance and implications of building strong, reciprocal partnerships with families and the wider community
  • Develop parental support programs to enhance children’s outcomes
  • Create opportunities for shared learning, networking and interactions between parents/ child/ teacher and other community members to establish trust and reciprocity
  • Reflect on approaches for flexible and adaptable participation in professional communities of practice that support the best possible outcomes for children 
  • Articulate practical strategies that support and build collaborative relationships with families and community


You will be assessed on your development of the following program learning outcomes in this course:

  • Engage with diverse learners in a range of educational contexts in order to develop skills and knowledge for flexible and adaptable participation in professional communities of practice. 
  • Communicate using a range of formats and strategies to audiences within and external to the discipline of education.
  • Work with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural, environmental and social awareness and ethical and reflective practice.

This course includes a range of activities from face to face, lectures, tutorials, workshops, on-line discussions, curriculum design and readings in order to support the development of the learning outcomes of the course.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.

Assessment may include reports, projects and presentations, individually and in groups. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.
