Course Description

This course focuses on current and historically significant educational thinkers and a range of established and emerging educational ideas and explores their impact on learning, teaching and the organization of education. You will examine the work of major educational thinkers who have influenced current early childhood thought, for example Froebel, Montessori, Dewey and Malaguzzi. You will investigate the place of education in society and develop an informed personal and professional stance regarding some important educational ideas, their interpretation, and their application in contemporary contexts and in work integrated learning.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Compare and contrast theories and philosophies in education.
  • Describe how theories and philosophies in education influence settings, practices and policies.
  • Articulate the educational theories and philosophies that shape your thinking as a teacher.
  • Identify and discuss the links between key educational ideas and current trends in educational thinking and models of practice
  • Reflect on learning experiences in professional practice and on contemporary educational issues in the light of important theories and philosophies in education.


You will be assessed on your development of the following program learning outcomes in this course:

  • Develop and apply theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to your professional practice and development in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment.
  • Critically analyse, synthesize and reflect on educational policy and practice in both local and international contexts.
  • Work with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural, environmental and social awareness and ethical and reflective practice.

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities both face to face and online such as lectures, tutorials, group and class discussion, group activities and individual research.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.

Assessment may include reports, projects and presentations, individually and in groups. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.
