Course Description

This course explores the theoretical perspectives and pedagogical strategies in the teaching and learning of numeracy and mathematics from birth to 8. You will examine pedagogical approaches for how children build their mathematical foundations in numeracy and understanding on mathematical concepts and the underpinnings at different stages of early childhood. You will design a conducive environment that promotes integrated learning for children to develop numeracy and mathematical knowledge in early childhood settings. You will explore how children construct knowledge in numeracy, mathematics and problem solving skills through meaningful experiences in music, play, art, languages, manipulative and other hands-on experiential learning activities. A variety of pedagogical approaches to numeracy and mathematics will be examined to assist you to develop strategies that will support and develop children’s problem solving skills and to promote understanding of numeracy and mathematical concepts in children that will lead to higher thinking order.
 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Discuss theories underpinning numeracy and mathematical concepts for children birth to 8
  • Develop models of mathematical approaches to facilitate and foster children’s learning of numeracy and mathematics in early childhood education
  • Critically analyse, synthesize and reflect on educational policy and practice in teaching and learning of numeracy and mathematics in both local and international early childhood educational contexts.
  • Use creativity, critical thinking and innovation in providing conducive environment and activities for diverse groups of children to construct meaningful experiences in their learning of numeracy and mathematics
  • Identify a range of pedagogical approaches and strategies to promote children’s problem solving skills and understanding of mathematical concepts
  • Design integrated learning plans for the teaching and learning of numeracy and mathematics
