Course Description
This course focuses on the use of an interactive approach to facilitate children’s investigation of science and technology in everyday experiences within early childhood settings. In particular, you will explore ideas of young children as investigators to support your knowledge and ability in how science and technology experiences can be practically explored in early childhood settings. You will investigate methods of scientific research for insights in how to share this knowledge with young children. The different sciences and the nature of science will be a focus.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Develop and apply knowledge and skills in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment of science and technology experiences within an early childhood context
- Design plans that foster children’s innate curiosity and investigations by providing opportunities for children to explore science and technology experiences
- Use creativity, critical thinking and innovation when identifying and solving problems to provide children with practical science and technology experiences
- Critically evaluate experiences and resources designed to promote children’s investigation and learning through science and technology experiences
You will be assessed on your development of the following program learning outcomes in this course:
- Develop and apply theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to your professional practice and development in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment.
- Demonstrate creativity, critical thinking and innovation when identifying and solving problems in diverse educational contexts.

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities both face to face and online such as lectures, tutorials, group and class discussion, group activities and individual research.

Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.
Assessment may include reports, projects and presentations, individually and in groups. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.
