Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

This course requires assumed undergraduate-level knowledge of the basic principles and techniques of process control.

Course Description

In this course you will develop expertise in the principles and application of advanced process control to design control systems for industrial processes and operations. The skills and experience obtained in this course enables the development of control solutions. You will study the principles and application of advanced process control to complex process operations. You will learn the fundamentals of the many advanced control techniques, including feed-forward and cascade control schemes, dead-time compensation and multivariable process control. You will learn how to identify the most appropriate techniques for real-world process operations and how to utilise these techniques to design control solutions.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to development of the following program learning outcomes:

2. Problem Solving and Design

  • Develop creative and innovative solutions to engineering problems
  • Anticipate the consequences of intended action or inaction and understand how the consequences are managed collectively by your organisation, project or team

3. Analysis

  • Comprehend and apply advanced theory-based understanding of engineering fundamentals and specialist bodies of knowledge in the selected discipline area to predict the effect of engineering activities

Apply underpinning natural, physical and engineering sciences, mathematics, statistics, computer and information sciences.

Upon successful completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Characterise and quantify a complex process operation in terms of its essential control elements, by identifying relevant parameters, constraints, requirements and controls.

  1. Design a classical control system for a real world process operation, accounting for model uncertainty, system requirements and design criteria.

Improve the controllability of these systems by implementation of advanced control techniques, which may involve more than one process variable and control element, taking into consideration technique suitability and advantages over alternative methods.

Overview of Learning Activities

Learning activities consist of weekly consultation sessions and tutorials, self-directed learning and case studies.

Overview of Learning Resources

The prescribed text for this course is Automated Continuous Process Control, C.A. Smith, Wiley 2002, which is available electronically through the RMIT Library.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment Item: Tutorials

Weighting of final grade: 20%

Related course learning outcomes: 1, 2, 3

Description: A series of tutorial problems will be used to test your theoretical understanding of the governing principles and application to industrial systems.

Assessment Item: Class test

Weighting of final grade: 30%

Related course learning outcomes: 1, 2, 3

Description: You will undertake a problem-based test that covers several topics of the course. This will involve control system examples including problem definition, analysis and solution and interpretation of results.

Assessment Item: Exam

Weighting of final grade: 50%

Related course learning outcomes: 1, 2, 3

Description: The final exam will test your theoretical understanding of the control systems and underlying principles as wells your ability to design, analyse and develop an advanced control system for a industrial processes.
