Upon the successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Compare and contrast design and digital media research methods, and evaluate their appropriateness for specific project applications.
  2. Critically analyse and discuss the literature and major works related to international practice in your area.
  3. Identify research aims and potential research contributions.
  4. Select and justify the use of appropriate research methods for specific project applications.
  5. Develop research proposals aligned to your field.

Overview of Learning Activities

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities both face-to-face and/or online such as workshops, tutorials, group and class discussion, class activities and individual research.

Please note that as MC245 Master of Design Futures is a solely online program, all learnings for this course will be online within that program.

Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.

A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources that are relevant to the focus of your own learning.

There are services available to support your learning, including the University Library and Study Support services. For further information, please visit the Library page on the RMIT University website and the myRMIT student portal.

Overview of Assessment

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.   Assessment Tasks   Assignment 1: Preliminary proposal [10%]. Linked learning outcomes: - Compare and contrast design and digital media research methods, and evaluate their appropriateness for specific project applications - Identify research aims and potential research contributions - Develop research proposals aligned to your field.

Assignment 2: Literature review [40%]. Linked learning outcomes: - Critically analyse and discuss the literature and major works related to international practice in your area - Critically analyse, synthesise and reflect on complex theories and recent developments, both local and international, to extend and challenge knowledge and practice in your field.

Assignment 3: Research proposal [50%]. In this task, you will develop the following learning outcomes: - Critically analyse and discuss the literature and major works related to international practice in your area - Identify research aims and potential research contributions - Select and justify the use of appropriate research methods for specific project applications - Develop research proposals aligned to your field - Critically analyse, synthesise and reflect on complex theories and recent developments, both local and international, to extend and challenge knowledge and practice in your field - Use appropriate research methods to design and execute substantial projects, evaluate the outcomes and theorise about the contribution of your learning to the profession and knowledge area

Assessment criteria for all assignments can be found on Canvas, brief PDFs and Turnitin.

Other Relevant Information

Submission of work for assessment: All assessment tasks will be submitted online through Canvas. AT2 and AT3 are submitted via Turnitin, which provides an Originality Report. It is recommended that you submit a draft prior to the deadline, so you have an opportunity to amend your submission if necessary and resubmit it prior to the deadline.
