Course Description

In this course, you will build on the knowledge gained in Creative Practice 1, and explore the role design and art play in digital games. You will develop a contemporary creative practice relevant to playable works with interactive and moving components that is informed by the history of game design. Knowledge of the relationship of digital games to other creative forms will be developed alongside relevant technical skills. Learning activities in this course will encourage you to experiment with your practice as you develop your own creative games portfolio.  


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes 

In this course, you will develop the following program learning outcomes:  

  • Develop a technical and conceptual portfolio relevant to game art and design and other forms of interactive entertainment. 
  • Apply a body of conceptual and practical knowledge to address other forms of media and communication. 
  • Communicate using diverse formats and strategies to audiences within and external to game art and design. 


Course Learning Outcomes 

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to: 

  1. Identify and adapt historical and contemporary design and art principles and apply them to current or future game environments and outputs. 
  2. Create technical and conceptual pre-production materials for digital games and related digital media. 
  3. Develop and apply appropriate workflows for digital game design production. 
  4. Apply spatial design skills in movement, 3D and interactivity for games and other related digital media.

You will be actively engaged in learning that involves a range of activities such as studios, project work, lectures, tutorials, class discussion, critiques, and individual and group activities.  Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities. Assessment may include projects, assignments, critiques, reports and presentations, which are conducted individually and/or in groups. 

ASSESSMENT 

1) Design Preproduction – 30% CLO: 1, 2

2) Design Production – 30% CLO: 3, 4

3) Refined Design Portfolio – 40% CLO: 1, 2, 3, 4
