Course Description

This course will develop your capability to lead transformative responses to the sustainability challenges facing society. You will develop your understanding of the science, economics, ethics and politics of climate change, population growth, economic growth, resource depletion and the capacity of social and environmental systems. You will critically examine responses that government, business and civil society may employ to address these inter-related challenges, including pollution and consumption taxes, carbon trading schemes, incentives and regulations, education, adaptation, research, innovation, alliancing and networking. This course emphasises a systems and values approach to developing vision and strategy for sustainability leadership, for both local and global contexts. You will develop and apply your understanding of leadership theory and techniques, and the skills and knowledge required to act as change leader for sustainability initiatives.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • Determine and apply knowledge of complex sustainable building theory, principles and practice, to contribute to the design and management of sustainable buildings.
  • Critically analyse, synthesise and reflect on sustainable design building theory and recent developments, both local and international, to extend and challenge knowledge and practice
  • Professionally communicate and justify sustainable building design principles, strategies, solutions and/or outcomes, engaging effectively with diverse stakeholders, including across the government and industry sectors
  • Provide strategic advice and utilise high level leadership and teamwork skills to plan and manage the implementation of projects which contribute to the sustainability performance of buildings, and the development of sustainable urban environments
  • Integrate and apply appropriate technical skills, research methodologies and tools to plan and execute professional practice and research projects, evaluate the outcomes and effectively communicate the results to contribute to the knowledge arena


Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Determine and apply knowledge of sustainability and leadership theory, principles and best practice to applied projects that contribute to the profession and built environment outcomes
  2. Critically analyse, synthesise and reflect on sustainability theory, issues, policy and practices both local and global to extend and challenge knowledge and practice
  3. Utilise disciplinary research and technical skills to develop, implement and communicate change strategies and solutions that are responsive to complex sustainable and economic theories to enhance organisational outcomes
  4. Apply leadership practices for predicting, implementing and embedding successful change, and building personal and organisational resilience


Overview of Learning Activities

Learning in this course will comprise a mixture of online problem-solving exercises and a residential workshop. The online exercises will require you to read, analyse and apply supplied and independently-sourced literature and to engage critically with leadership theory and practice. The residential workshop will include seminars, class discussions and individual- and group problem based learning exercises.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment consists of:

Task 1: Group work: Presentation and Report. Transformation to Low Carbon Economy. 30% weighting. CLO 1, CLO 2. 

Task 2: Individual work: Reflective Journals. Reflection on Leadership Practices. 30% weighting. CLO 1.

Task 3: Individual work: Presentation and Report. Case Study Scenario. 40% weighting. CLO 2, CLO 3, CLO 4.

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
