Course Description

In this course you will investigate how practitioners develop their work from concept to resolution. You will explore how these ways of working can be developed in your own practice. You will apply knowledge and skills in creating visual narratives through the use of photographic media and will explore the theories and principles that are relevant to the theme of the studio.  You will also have the opportunity to further develop knowledge and technical skills that will enable you to produce the work that you have conceptualised.



Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • Employ critical, cultural discourses and technical knowledge of contemporary photographic practices and emerging technologies to achieve sophisticated visual outcomes

  • Utilize advanced photographic knowledge and technical skills to contribute to visual discourses in your chosen field of photography

  • Apply a body of theoretical and practical knowledge and specific skills in the discipline in which to base your professional practice or future study.


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Examine and discuss how images can be constructed to communicate messages to diverse audiences.
  • Evaluate images with reference to context and narrative.
  • Select and apply materials and processes appropriate to create your images.
  • Identify and apply appropriate knowledge and technical strategies in capture and post production to create photographic images.
  • Reflect on your own work and provide feedback on the work of others

The studio will be presented through a variety of activities including workshops, experimentation, lectures, critical analysis, discussion, practice, presentation and reflection.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes.

Assessment Task 1: Blog 25% LO 1, 2, 3, 4

Assessment Task 2: Assignment, 25% LO 3, 4, 5

Assessment Task 3: Assignment, 40% LO 3, 4, 5

Assessment Task 4: Assignment, 10% LO 1, 2, 5

Assessment may include creative photographic projects, reflective papers, quizzes and presentations. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning.

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
