Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

You should have satisfactorily completed the prerequisite courses GRAP2646 Advanced Fashion Design Studio 2 or GRAP2460 Fashion Design Studio 8 before you commence this course.

Co-requisites

You should undertake GRAP2710 Practice-Led Research Design at the same time as this course as it contains areas of knowledge and skills which are implemented together in practice. These are co-requisite courses.

Note it is a condition of enrolment at RMIT that you accept responsibility for ensuring that you have completed the prerequisite/s and agree to concurrently enrol in co-requisite courses before enrolling in a course.

Course Description

Your Practice:  Context and Concepts

With guidance from your studio supervisors, you will develop the framework for conceptualising and contextualising an individual and original, innovative fashion design body of work. This course extends your professional and critical knowledge of a selected range of technical, creative, cultural and professional issues related to fashion practice.

You will develop the ability, in consultation with your studio supervisors, to establish your own program of fashion study that can best convey your particular interests and capabilities. Then, you will develop the ability to trial and integrate understanding into your design proposals, combined with the communication techniques necessary to demonstrate this understanding of your practice. 

In conjunction with your studio supervisor, you will devise your own contract and program of study to suit your particular investigation of fashion.

Program Learning Outcomes

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

1. Research and creatively solve problems, demonstrating innovation in fashion design, independent expert judgement and ethical responsibility relating to your professional practice in the broader system of fashion.

2. Provide design leadership to effectively plan and manage the implementation of new directions and strategies within the global fashion industry, as well as effectively collaborate with others

3. Master a body of knowledge and specific technical and research skills to recognise and apply relevant design applications and technologies within the field of fashion.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

• Propose, research and articulate original and independent fashion design concepts.

• Apply advanced design skills to resolve complex ideas from concept formation through to design prototypes.

• Critically analyse, contextualise and communicate the concepts embodying your work in relation to the general fashion discourse

• Enhance your ability to exercise a high level of independence and initiative in the execution of design decisions related to your own philosophy and ethos.

Overview of Learning Activities

Individual project based learning is supported by masterclasses, studio and workshop sessions. You will extend your own design inquiry to develop a professional fashion body of work, which may involve working with other disciplines, working with industry partners or working independently. You will research, contextualise and independently oversee a personally developed design brief.

You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.

Course and project resources will be available online through the online learning platform CANVAS.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the learning outcomes of the course, as well as on your development against the program learning outcomes.

Your major design project will be reviewed as a work in progress according to aims outlined in your project proposal at a mid-semester critique, and through a series of peer reviews and feedback sessions. Your major project will be assessed by a panel which includes industry practitioners and academics with verbal and/or written feedback provided on all assessment tasks.
