Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

There are no prerequisites for this course; however, you should have some basic understanding about networking, security, storage and virtualisation.


Course Description

Virtualisation is technology that the world uses to efficiently operate almost all IT,especially the cloud based services we use in everyday life.

This course will provide you with an introduction to the key aspects.

When you complete this course you will understand not only the technical side, but also the business reasons why virtualisation might be appropriate to deploy in an organisation.

In this course we provide a theoretical background, and apply that knowledge into practical scenarios which commonly occur in industry.This course includes a Work Integrated Learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/or community is integral to your experience.This is the designated capstone course for our program as it pulls together many of the skills and techniques learnt over the duration of the whole program.

On completion of this course you should be able to:
1. Understand the business case for virtualisation
2. Understand how commerical considerations influence IT design decisions
3. Apply an understanding of scale problems in environment design
4. Build a virtual environment
5. Maintain a virtual envrionment


Overview of Learning Activities

The learning activities included in this course are: 
Key concepts will be explained in lectures, classes or online, where syllabus material will be presented and the subject matter will be illustrated with demonstrations and examples;
Tutorials and/or labs and/or group discussions (including online forums) focussed on projects and problem solving will provide practice in the application of theory and procedures, allow exploration of concepts with teaching staff and other students, and give feedback on your progress and understanding;
Assignments, as described in Overview of Assessment (below), requiring an integrated understanding of the subject matter; and
Private study, working through the course as presented in classes and learning materials, and gaining practice at solving conceptual and technical problems.

You will make extensive use of computer laboratories and relevant software provided by the School. You will be able to access course information and learning materials through MyRMIT  and may be provided with copies of additional materials in class or via email.
