Course Description

This course investigates the principles of infrastructure engineering and management.  You will develop your analytical skills and practical knowledge as you consider how theoretical concepts are applied to real problems encountered in the planning, management and operation of infrastructure. The role of professionals from other   disciplines in tackling infrastructure-related issues and problems is also addressed. The course is suitable for engineers employed in the infrastructure planning and management sector.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to development of the following program learning outcomes for MC257 Master of Engineering (Civil Engineering):

  • Describe, investigate and analyse complex engineering systems and associated issues.
  • Identify and assess risks (including OH&S) as well as the economic, social and environmental impacts of engineering activities.

  • Develop creative and innovative solutions to engineering problems.
  • Develop and operate within a hazard and risk framework appropriate to engineering activities.
  1. Analysis
  • Comprehend and apply advanced theory-based understanding of engineering fundamentals and specialist bodies of knowledge in the selected discipline area to predict the effect of engineering activities.
  • Apply underpinning natural, physical and engineering sciences, mathematics, statistics, computer and information sciences.

  • Understand the scope, principles, norms, accountabilities and bounds of contemporary engineering practice in the specific discipline.
  • Apply systematic approaches to the conduct and management of engineering projects.


On completion of this course, you should be able to:

  1. Plan the development of infrastructure projects.
  2. Recognise the need to plan, manage and maintain infrastructure at a high level.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of reliability theory.
  4. Explain the principles of reliability engineering and reliability engineering processes.
  5. Identify and be able to use mathematical tools and techniques commonly used in systems analysis.
  6. Develop a systems engineering management plan for practical application.

The course activities are structured around lectures and tutorials to develop and consolidate your knowledge. Through assignments, presentations and online case studies, you will apply and enhance both your theoretical and practical skills.

In this course you will interrogate contemporary and emerging literature with local, national and global relevance in order to inform your specialist knowledge and skills in infrastructure planning and management. Assessment Task 1 [15%]: Assignment (Group):

This assessment task addresses infrastructure maintenance (CLOs 1, 2 and 5).

Assessment Task 2 [35%]: Major Assignment (Group):

This assessment task addresses infrastructure maintenance optimisation and prioritisation (CLOs 3, 4 and 6).

Assessment Task 3 [50%]: Major Assignment (Individual):

This assessment task addresses the theoretical and practical issues on infrastructure planning and management (CLOs 1-6). It will cover all the contents in this course, where the related questions could include both descriptive and calculation questions, which will be provided near the end of the course.
