Course Description


This is an external course offered by Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC), Barcelona, Spain. Additional costs are involved not included in RMIT tuition fees.

This course incorporates projects related to topics which offer students the opportunity to apply different tools and strategies in accordance to diverse approaches and contexts. The common objective is recognising and valuing the main arguments that are the foundation of contemporary urban regenerating and growth projects in the global south. Themes addressed include:  international cooperation, sustainable urban development, community participation and human settlements. The methodological approach incorporates analysis, diagnosis and strategic guidelines or proposals at the urban scale.

You will learn to provide useful analysis and feedback that can serve clients in the processes of monitoring, evaluating, reforming and innovating plans, programs, policies and/or projects. You will acquire scientific knowledge based on international research and perspectives from different sectors that contribute to a global vision on sustainable urbanism and development.

The course is field-based and includes a field visit to a developing country, where you will gain knowledge from the actual situation ‘on the ground’ and from local experts and organisations. A series of guided learning experiences are structured around the field visit.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development


Upon completion of the fieldtrip you will be able to:

  • Work with urban design methodologies and tools to target different needs felt by diverse social groups.  
  • Apply practical spatial skills and knowledge of urban upgrading and human settlements
  • Interpret and develop a spatial diagnosis and economic development assessment
  • Interpret and recollect qualitative data through observations, interviews and informal conversation.
  • Respond to and work with a client
  • Perform effectively in a team situation

Develop appropriate written and oral communication skills for addressing the divers stakeholders involved and their concerns    



Overview of Learning Activities

You will engage in learning that involves a range of activities, both face-to-face and online, such as fieldwork, discussions, group work and research. Learning how to analyse and comment on your own and others’ work will be achieved through individual presentations, reviews and discussions in groups.

UIC will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems. Field-based seminars and meetings with experts and organisations in the country visited will comprise key learning activities and resources.

Additionally a list of recommended learning resources will be provided, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.

Overview of Assessment


You will be assessed on how well you participate and contribute to the workshop. Assessment includes a final presentation to the main stakeholders as well as a graphic and written document. The work will be developed in mixed teams made up of the different universities participating in the international workshop.

The course assessment conforms to the assessment principles, regulations, policies, procedures and instructions of the Master of International Cooperation Sustainable Emergency Architecture at UIC.
