Course Description

In this course, you will explore specialist typographic principles and techniques. You will critically examine the history and theory of typography in order to understand and progress current industry practices. You will complete projects that employ experimental and advanced approaches to typography and lettering across digital and print media. You will synthesise knowledge of historical and contemporary avant-gardes in typography to develop sophisticated solutions to communication design problems.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course, you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

• Develop and apply skills in communicating complex ideas in a primary visual form in ways that are innovative and responsive to changing social and technogical contexts.

• Employ appropriate technical skills and theoretical knowledge to solve problems associated with creative work in communication design.

• Critically reflect on your work to demonstrate autonomy, good judgement and ethical responsibility.


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Synthesise specialist knowledge of typographic theory and principles, and important practice precedents.
  2. Apply historical and technical knowledge of typographic principles and practices in innovative and experimental communication design practice.
  3. Execute sophisticated typographic solutions to contemporary communication design problems in digital or print media.
  4. Critically reflect on the implications of experimental practices in typography.
