Course Description

You will be introduced to various advanced nanotechnology instruments and techniques in a series of intensive, small group immersion activities in a number of different nanotechnology environments including RMIT research laboratories, modelling experiences and off-site workshops. Immersive laboratory rotations may include: quantum imaging and biophotonics, ab initio and molecular modelling, medical imaging and synchrotron science. You will learn state-of-the-art techniques and the necessary skills to subsequently choose a specific research project in your discipline area in Year 2 of MC204 Master of Nanotechnology and Smart Materials program.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Plan and conduct complex experiments, theory and modelling in nanotechnology methods
  2. Select as fit-for-purpose and demonstrate skills in the use of sophisticated tools in various nanotechnology environments
  3. Report, defend and disseminate experimental findings according to conventions appropriate to scientific and non-scientific audiences.
  4. Articulate and adhere to safe working practice in nanotechnology laboratories.
  5. Identify a suitable research project in the field of NanoSmart to be performed in Year 2.

This course contributes to the development of the following program learning outcomes:

1. Acquire, investigate, analyse and synthesise complex information, concepts and theories relating to cutting edge developments in nanotechnology and smart materials.

2. Demonstrate advanced knowledge of research principles and methods applicable to future nanotechnology inquiry in theoretical and applied (industry) contexts

3. Identify and critique aspects of the interdisciplinary nature of nanotechnology research and smart materials development drawing upon their practical experience in state-of-the-art laboratories (including RMIT Micro Nano Research Facility and RMIT Microscopy and Microanalysis Research Facility).

4. Apply relevant knowledge and skills with intellectual independence, creativity and initiative to solve problems and devise solutions to contemporary and emerging, local and global challenges in the field of nanotechnology and smart materials.

5. Exhibit requisite communication skills to disseminate research findings appropriate to the intended audience and the medium of communication

6. Adhere to appropriate regulatory frameworks, work safely in cleanroom environments and demonstrate ethical conduct.

Overview of Learning Activities

You will learn the techniques used in contemporary and emerging nanotechnology as you participate in immersive rotations through various laboratories. You will work both individually and collaboratively with your peers and nanotechnology experts at the interface of theory, experimentation, modelling, design, development and application.

Total study hours

You will undertake the equivalent of six hours per week in intensive laboratory immersion experiences. In addition you can expect to spend a minimum of four hours per week in independent study.

Overview of Learning Resources

Current research literature, laboratory manuals and bespoke resources will be used as required and as appropriate given the wide variety of systems to which you will be exposed during rotations.
