Course Description

In this course you will have the opportunity to extend your professional practice knowledge and skills by undertaking a study tour.

The study tour will comprise travel to one or more national or international destinations to experience and participate in various global fashion industry practices and events. These may include visits to fashion production sites (for example design firms and manufacturing facilities) and/or attendance at specific fashion events (for example fashion weeks, conferences and exhibitions). The study tour may also include collaborative projects with classes and assessable tasks hosted by partner institutions (for example design briefs set by industry or projects with students from partner universities).

In response to changing global opportunities, specific tour destinations and associated activities will vary in each semester offered. You are advised to contact the offering course co-ordinator for details of scheduled tours.

This course complements the embedded Work Integrated Learning (WIL) activities in the BH103 program, by further expanding your understanding of the global context of the fashion industry and giving you particular insight into global pathways for your future career. Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

• Critically analyse and discuss key characteristics and emerging issues of global practice in a fashion context
• Analyse the influence of cultural factors on fashion practice in specific industry contexts and locations
• Reflect upon your personal and professional learning, making connections between academic knowledge and skills and practical applications
• Engage with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural, environmental and social awareness and ethical and reflective practice.

Overview of Learning Activities

The Study Tour will be organised by the School of Fashion and Textiles, however all costs will be at your own expense.

Participation in this course is based on the successful completion of an application process which must be completed and approved prior to the offering semester. Successful applicants must met the selection criteria and you should note that the application process is subject to strict deadlines so early application is advised.

Learning activities will comprise:

• A suite of pre- departure meetings

• A national or international study tour of approx. 10-14 days including some or all of the following:
- Visits to: fashion design firms; fashion production facilities; universities; museums, galleries and cultural institutions; fashion events; conferences/lectures
- Participation in group projects before, during and following the tour which may include face-to-face workshops, presentations and online collaboration activities
- Independent creative and/or research activities

• A series of post-tour meetings and/or classes

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.

Assessment tasks will comprise:
• A major project (completed in collaboration with partner institutions where possible)
• A destination report that contextualises the fashion industry experience with specific reference to the geographical regions visited.
• A reflective journal that documents and critically analyses your tour experience
