Course Description

This course enables you to examine nutrition knowledge relevant to families with children aged 0-6 years. It embraces a developmental and family centred approach. It will encompass nutrition issues including the promotion, support and protection of breastfeeding, the assessment and management of breastfeeding issues, appropriate use of infant formula, the introduction of first foods and the nutritional requirements for infants, toddlers, pre-schoolers and families. Community management of key nutrition issues and relevant referral will also be explored.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the development of the Program Learning Outcomes for GD159 Graduate Diploma in Child and Family Health Nursing in the following way:

  • PLO 1: Communicate in an effective culturally appropriate and sensitive way to a wide audience through a broad range of mediums with individuals and groups of diverse backgrounds and values. 
  • PLO 7. Apply the principles and methods of scientific inquiry and re-search and incorporate this information into your professional evidence-based practice.


On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Apply advanced knowledge of breastfeeding and human lactation. Demonstrate cognitive and technical skills to assess, analyse, support and manage key maternal and infant breastfeeding issues.
  2. Exhibit specialised knowledge of infant formula and be able to communicate this to families and other professionals.
  3. Review the key principles of infant and child growth and factors that may cause variations. 
  4. Synthesise assessment findings related to nutrition and child growth parameters (including sensitively discussing any areas of concern with parents); exploring interim management strategies; and referring for medical/dietitian review as appropriate. 
  5. Promote and communicate evidence-based nutrition practices for infants, young children and families including applying knowledge and skills related to group work with families and implementing this in a community child and family setting. 
  6. Critically examine key nutrition issues in child, family and community health and propose strategies to collaborate with families, allied health workers and the community to address these.

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.
