Course Description

This course focuses on linking theory and practice in working with children between the ages two and eight years. You will explore the teaching role and its responsibilities, and integrate knowledge related to curriculum approaches for play-based learning, relevant theories and philosophies, program planning and quality environments. You will engage in reflective practice as you apply theory to the design of relational pedagogical spaces and the documentation of children’s learning and development.

This course includes a work integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in an early childhood setting and where feedback from industry and/ or community is integral to your experience.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • Engage with diverse learners in a range of educational contexts in order to develop skills and knowledge for flexible and adaptable participation in professional communities of practice
  • Develop and apply theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to your professional practice and development in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment
  • Apply knowledge of local and international perspectives and issues about contemporary early childhood practice


Course Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Apply knowledge of child development for children aged between two to eight years and demonstrate ability to link theories and practice
  • Apply contemporary learning theories, pedagogical approaches, resources and technologies to engage children and promote learning
  • Critically reflect and evaluate the teaching role in early childhood contexts, and  strategies to enhance learning and professional practice
  • Develop and articulate a personal and professional philosophy for early childhood education
  • Critically reflect and apply philosophy to practice
  • Develop and apply theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to your professional practice and development in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment.


Overview of Learning Activities

This course will be delivered in two learning modes: fully online and face-to-face. You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities such as online/ face-to-face lectures, group discussion, group activities, readings, critical analysis, reflection, and self-directed research. For students enrolled in the face-to-face learning mode, there will be face-to-face lectures, tutorials and class discussions. A component of this course is linked to professional practice.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

Assessment in the course will be both theoretical and practical in nature. A range of formative and summative assessment types will be incorporated into the course including development of a professional experience portfolio that demonstrates how the specific areas of professional experience practice have been addressed.

Assessment Task 1: Quiz 10%

Assessment Task 2: Essay (2000 words) 40%

Assessment Task 3: Professional experience portfolio (Equivalent 2000 words) 50%

Assessment in this course is directly connected to your successful participation in professional experience. The end-of-placement report from your supervising teacher(s) on your professional development and participation in professional experience is an important component of your assessment. It will provide evidence of your ability to demonstrate the relevant professional practices and course learning outcomes specifically associated with the assessment tasks in the course.
