Course Description

In this course your will unpack the role of leadership and management in early childhood contexts through the investigation of early childhood development and curriculum, and contemporary educational issues and discourses. You will examine the theories and concepts of educational leadership and management in early childhood education and care services. You will explore pedagogical leadership to identify the role of leaders in guiding, mentoring and collaborating with educators to translate pedagogy into practice. You will examine the influence and integral role of leaders in building partnerships with educators, parents and the community to achieve outcomes and expectations. You will also investigate aspects of advocacy, ethics, organisation culture, communication and liaison with government authorities.

This course includes a work integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in an early childhood setting, and where feedback from industry and/ or the community is integral to your experience


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • Analyse, synthesise and reflect on educational policy and practice in both local and international contexts.
  • Communicate using a range of formats and strategies to audiences within and external to the discipline of education.
  • Apply initiative and judgement in planning, problem solving and decision making to enhance your practice and continuing professional development.


Course learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Analyse different leadership and management theories and concepts in early childhood education
  • Identify, interpret and apply policies and quality standards for leadership and management in the early childhood industry
  • Communicate professionally to parents, children, educational professionals and management, and government, and work collaboratively with stakeholders
  • Identify and respond appropriately to legal responsibilities and ethical issues that arise in early childhood settings


Overview of Learning Activities

This course will be delivered in two learning modes: fully online and face-to-face. You will engage in learning that involves a range of activities such as online or face-to-face lectures, group discussion, group activities, readings, critical analysis, reflection, and individual research. For students enrolled in the face-to-face learning mode, there will be face-to face lectures, tutorials and class discussions. A component of this course is linked to professional experience.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

There are two formal assessment tasks in this course.

Assessment Task 1: Research Report 50% (CLOs 1,2,4)
Assessment Task 2: Professional Experience Portfolio 50% (CLOs 2,3,4)
