Course Description

In this course you will be introduced to the Australian legal system, different sources of legislation and how to apply legal principles to actual and/or hypothetical scenarios, explore solutions to legal problems, and form reasoned conclusions to negligence and contact law cases. You will undertake research and learn how to analyse and apply legal principles in a business environment.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

1. Describe the components of the Australian legal system.

2. Explain the role played by the courts, the importance of precedent and the rules of statutory interpretation.

3. Demonstrate an understanding of the law of negligence.

4. Demonstrate an understanding of the law of contract, with particular emphasis on contract formation.

5. Describe the law as it relates to business practices, which are deemed anti-competitive and unfair.

6. Work in groups to research and analyse legal problems and effectively communicate a range of potential solutions.

Your learning experience will include face-to- face teaching, in class discussions, group work, and individual problem solving exercises and out of class research.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment will include a closed book test, oral presentation, court report, research assignment and an open book exam.
