Course Description
The purpose of this course is to introduce you to the skills required for tertiary study in programming, computing and information technology courses, or courses that require this knowledge. You will develop competence in creative and lateral thinking, and in analysis and problem solving using computing technology and skills.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
See Learning Outcomes.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:
- LO1: Apply the principles and basic theories of computing for further training in careers involving computers.
- LO2: Apply creative thinking and analytical problem solving techniques to define, analyse and solve problems using computers.
- LO3: Demonstrate understanding of the concepts involved in the development of algorithms and apply these to programming using a high-level computer language.
- LO4: Adapt common situations for spread sheet analysis to increase the efficiency of problem solving.
Program Learning Outcomes
In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:
- Explain and apply foundational knowledge in one or more academic disciplines.
- Demonstrate familiarity and capability in study skills for an Australian university environment.
- Apply approaches to critical and analytical thinking and problem solving.
- Use a range of current learning technologies to enhance academic outcomes.
Overview of Learning Activities
You will learn about principles and basic theories and their application through lectures or online notes. Supervised problem based practice classes will build your skill in applying theory and develop your capacity to think creatively and analytically.
Assignments and quizzes will consolidate your knowledge of topics presented in class.
Overview of Learning Resources
RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems. The online system will give you access to important announcements, staff contact details, the teaching schedule, assessment timelines, library resources, relevant software and a variety of important teaching and learning materials.
