Course Description
In this course you will be introduced to theoretical frameworks and communication practices that can be used to enhance dialogue between communities, civil society and governments.
You will examine community engagement as a concept that encompasses both process and outcome. This will be done by exploring how the purpose for bringing together members of community, civil society and government, determines the choice of engagement methods employed.
You will investigate a range of community engagement initiatives, including those focused on building relationships, and/or developing community capacity; through to those that aim to make decisions about policy or services for social change.
In the course you will examine the strengths and weaknesses of different community and civic engagement initiatives, and reflect on what can be learned from engaging with communities and with community-identified problems.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This is an option course, which will complement the learning outcomes you are developing in your program.
Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:
- Examine and analyse the major principles and theories of community and civic engagement.
- Identify the stakeholders and analyse their needs in relation to community-based issue/s.
- Propose and critically discuss community and civic engagement initiatives to address identified issue/s.
- Critically reflect on the principles and values of community engagement and how it is situated within your personal and professional practice.
Overview of Learning Activities
You will be engaged in blended learning that involves a range of activities both face-to-face and/or online such as workshops, tutorials, presentations, group and class discussion, class activities and individual research.

Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.
Assessment 1: (20%) Your role as Closing the Loop Host during a session: Individual
(CLO1, CLO4)
Assessment 2: (40%) Case Study Analysis:Groups of 2 students or Individual
(CLO1,CLO2)
Assessment 3: (40%) Industry Report : Groups of 2 or Individual
(CLO1,CLO2,CLO3,CLO4)
