It is expected that students enrolling in this course have completed an Australian three year Bachelor degree in Textile Design (or equivalent). This includes having completed theoretical and contextual studies within the discipline in preparation for further study at a post-graduate level.

Course Description

This course will expose you to social and cultural experiences in the fashion & textiles industry, combined with an active interface with industry practitioners and experts who will share their viewpoints.  Through this course you will broaden your vision, recognise opportunities and develop methodologies that assist you in positioning your textile design concepts. 

The two key areas of focus enable you to develop and articulate your design identity/philosophy, and develop a participatory model that connects with the broader global fashion & textiles industry.

This course includes a work integrated learning experience where you will work with key industry practitioners analysing and testing cultural and social ideas impacting on fashion & textiles.  This will enable you to develop your knowledge and skills in a real or simulated workplace context, where feedback from industry and/or community is integral to your experience.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes:

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  •  Operate professionally, critically, and ethically in local and /or global practice within textile design or across disciplinary boundaries
  • Reflect upon and assess the global context of textile design, so as to apply your advanced skills for life-long learning and enable you to confidently contribute to an industry that is always evolving
  • Develop an individual effective leadership ethos that extends awareness for the global, social, cultural and ethical values of design


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Critically analyse, reflect upon and discuss sustainable, social and cultural issues impacting the fashion & textiles design industry
  • Interrogate, research and evaluate global issues relevant to textiles, and develop your own ethos and position related to these
  • Collaborate and share creative and professional ideas within the global fashion & textils system with industry practitioners and peers
  • Formulate a professional position on how you respond to key industry issues so as to build the foundation for your future leadership in the fashion & textiles industry.


Overview of Learning Activities

This course will take a blended approach in its delivery. You will be actively engaged in learning that involves a range of activities. Lectures, studio workshops, excursions, collaborative projects and interactive class activities provide the platform for the sharing and learning of knowledge.

Integral to Professional Engagement is self directed immersion within the system of fashion that requires you incorporate work-based learning and academic learning, referred to as Work Integrated Learning (WIL). This will allow you to solve authentic industry problems or address real issues faced within the fashion & textiles system.

The course provides you with a diverse range of learning experiences. These may combine self-directed research, analysis, reflection and discussion, with peer and industry actions with government, design companies, cultural and industry events, individuals and educational institutions.


Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.

Technical reference books, trade publications and magazines will be recommended as required and as specified by lecturers for individual project areas.  There are no prescribed texts.  You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

The varied nature of the learning activities include critique, peer review and class discussions which require your ongoing class participation to achieve the course objectives.  You will receive regular reviews of progress during the course and formative feedback on your academic progress.  Assessment tasks undertaken in this course will be based on a combination of individual and group work, documentation and reflection.

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
