Course Description
This course aims to provide you with an understanding of the health law principles in the Australian legal system. It examines social perspectives and determinants of health and the role of law and patient-doctor relations, including issues of medical decision-making. The course explores legal issues arising out of reproductive technologies, withdrawal and withholding of medical treatment and euthanasia. Organ and tissue donation, property in the human body and genetics are also explored, along with, mental health and public health issues in Australia and internationally.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:
- Demonstrate an advanced and integrated understanding of Health Law in Australia;
- Critically evaluate the Health Law system in light of contemporary legal issues and developments;
- Critically analyse and research complex problems relating to Health Law;
- Demonstrate the intellectual and practical skills needed to justify and interpret professional decisions and identify, research, evaluate and synthesise relevant factual, legal and policy issues using legislation, case law and secondary source materials.
Overview of Learning Activities
To achieve the objectives in this course requires you to participate in various learning activities. These activities comprise of engaging in legal research by searching texts, legal databases, internet resources and law journals. You will read text material, case law and legislation. You will prepare written answers to fact-based health law problems and resolve ethical and legal questions within case study problems.
