Course Description

This course introduces you to experiences that link your creative practice to the broader context of fine art. It is offered in partnership with the ART1 theory course. It introduces you to the material, conceptual and technical methods applicable to a specialized studio practice.

You will engage in a series of structured projects based upon studio, creation and enquiry to develop ideas about creativity and the histories and methods of art practice. You will create a range of artworks and related support materials. The aim of this course is to introduce you to the conventions and skills of making, analysing, researching, responding and discussing your own work and the work of others

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

  • Acquire knowledge of creative practice and theory and their applications to fine art
  • Effective communication through artistic production across a range of media and studio methods with awareness of and sensitivity to local and global contexts

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Identify and creatively employ relevant studio methods to produce resolved art works that respond to structured projects
  2. Translate ideas through specialized studio methods and research to make a series of developmental art works
  3. Critically reflect on your own work and the work of others
  4. Engage with art through gallery visits

Overview of Learning Activities

In this course you will engage with the studio as a process of creation and as a site of practice and enquiry. It is studio based which means your learning will be activated through experimenting, exploring, composing, texting, envisioning, observing, and playing with a range of materials and art making processes to initiate a studio practice.

There will be opportunities for you to learn through making works, experimenting with materials, practice based research, workshops, presentations demonstrations, lectorials, gallery and site visits, reflective writing, group discussions, consultations on your studio work and occupational health and safety demonstrations.

You will receive verbal and/or written feedback from academic staff and peers through a variety of consultations and tutorials on your studio work. You will also have access to online materials, instructional tutorials, readings and interviews with artists through Canvas and the https://artschoolportal.com

You will present your work in a series of open feedback sessions with academic staff and your peers. Feedback sessions are designed to support the resolution of your artwork, as well as to facilitate the development of your ability to analyse and interpret art works. This feedback will help you track how your learning is progressing against the specified learning outcomes and capabilities for this course.
