Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

This course is a capstone course in the Bachelor of Business Human Resource Management program. 

What this means is that we draw together all the previous knowledge that you have accumulated over your degree and we begin the process of applying that knowledge in appropriate and creative ways.  It also means that it is your responsibility to make those connections between the theory we teach in this course and your previous  learning.  We won't tell you when to draw upon your previous knowledge and experience, you are expected to be independent learners.

That's why this course is inappropriate for students who are not at the end of their program sequence.  We strongly encourage you to delay enrolment in this course and to take it in your final year when you have more appropriate experience and a chance to accumulate the kind of knowledge required to enable you to do well.


Course Description

This course provides you with a capstone experience, which will give you the opportunity to integrate, critically reflect on and consolidate the learning from your Human Resource Management program.

The purpose of the course is to incorporate human resource and employment relation theory and practice. It adopts a holistic approach to integrating theory and practice in an innovative method of hypothesising about what the future of work will look like.  The development of research, critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills are accentuated to examine and discuss the future of work topic.

You will have the opportunity to integrate the knowledge and skills acquired from other HRM courses throughout the program and to review and evaluate current issues facing organisations, management and labour.  This course will help to shape an appreciation of the complexities and contemporary challenges faced by employees and managers as they strive to function in the changing environment and the interrelationships between work and society.

The course places emphasis on assessments being conducted collectively by team members and maximises peer to peer collaborative learning, therefore reflecting the increased importance of team approaches to managing and resolve real work challenges.  This course incorporates a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) component through engagement with industry to assist you to develop ideas for your research project and associated assessments.

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

CLO1: Critically examine the patterns and trends that influence changes to the nature of work in the local and global context.

CLO2: Identify, evaluate and discuss critical aspects and characteristics of the changing nature of work and key contributing factors.

CLO3: Critique past and present work patterns and their relevance to contemporary organisation of work, employment and the implications for management and labour

CLO4: Apply relevant theories to hypothesize on the future of work

CLO5: Identify, evaluate and develop ethical, equitable, socially and culturally responsible solutions to emerging employment relations and human resource challenges

CLO6: Effectively communicate practical and innovative solutions whilst being accountable, responsible and reflective in regard to individual and team learning and professionally appropriate practice

 


Overview of Learning Activities

This course is delivered in a blended mode.  A significant part of the content will be delivered through online material.  Face-to-face sessions are weekly three hour lectorials.

You are required to read, watch, listen to online lecture-materials and prepare responses questions posed on this material.  It will be assumed in the seminar that students have come prepared and are ready to engage in discussion and in response to online course materials over the semester. 

 


Overview of Learning Resources

Various learning resources are available online through Canvas.  In addition to topic notes;  assessment details and a study schedule.  You will be provided with links to relevant online information;  readings;  audio and video clips and communication tools to facilitate collaboration with your peers and to share information.

Weekly readings will be provided to you to prepare for the seminar, and you will also be required to research  materials to conduct a research project (team research inquiry).  You will work to develop your team research enquiry over the semester on predicting future work trends, utilising related tools and applications and the exploration of theory and themes related to the future of work.

In this course you will be encouraged to be an active learner.  Your learning will be supported through various in-class and online activities comprising individual and group work.  Seminars will encourage student participation through group and class discussions  generated from student readings, peer learning and questions.  Resources are also available online through RMIT Library databases and other facilities.  If you require assistance with the RMIT library facilities contact the  Business Liaison Librarian for your school.  Contact details for Business Liaison Librarians are located online on the RMIT library website.
