Students need to apply and be accepted prior to enrolling in this course. An expression of interest is required and interviews are conducted with the study tour leader as part of the application process as numbers are limited.
Course Description
The study tour provides students with the opportunity to immerse themselves in the target language and culture in-country. Each year the destination country and theme is decided in advance. The study tour includes interaction with a wide range of individuals from non-governmental organisations, academic institutions and local communities. The target language and culture is explored through formal language and culture classes and/or cultural events and site visits conducted in the target language.
The tour involves living and travelling together as a group with opportunities for local community immersions. The study tour utilises a number of action-learning approaches, such as participant-observation, immersion, group discussions and fieldwork. Debriefing and reflection sessions are integral to the program to assist in sharing and processing lessons learned both in the destination country and upon return to Melbourne.

Program Learning Outcomes
This course is being offered as an elective and program learning outcomes will relate to the program offering the course.
Upon successful completion of the course you will be able to:
- Communicate effectively with a wide range of individuals from non-governmental organisations, academic institutions and local communities in the target language
- Explore and analyse an international or cross-cultural issue in depth that builds on your previous learning and experience and present your findings.
- Reflect on and participate in debates on socio-cultural topics related to the target language and location
- Design and manage a research project in an unfamiliar cultural context, using appropriate elements of action-learning research methodology.
Overview of Learning Activities
The course may include pre-departure seminars and workshops, the details of which will be available on the student portal, myRMIT.
A variety of structured in class activities provide opportunities to develop all language skills (oral/aural/reading/writing) with a particular emphasis on writing skills.
Multimedia resources, and readings relating to socio-cultural topics will be introduced and discussed. Students will be expected to participate actively in many pair and group activities and to use the target language as far as possible (depending on the proficiency level of the group).

RMIT will provide resources and tools for learning in this course through online systems. Access to a wide range of learning resources and content for the course will be available from the student portal, myRMIT.
Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes.
Assessment may consist of:
1) Class presentation (equal to 1000 words) prior to departure 30% (CLO1, CLO2, CLO4)
2) Reflective diary (1000 words) to be completed during the tour and submitted on the last day overseas 30% (CLO1, CLO2, CLO3)
3) Final report / research project (2000 words) to be completed and submitted two weeks after return 40% (CLO2, CLO3, CLO4)
Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
